Septic Service on Long Island

Calling "a septic company" can get you a pump truck when you needed a camera, or an installer when you needed an inspector. Start with the job, then find the company licensed for it.

Your mother’s house in Centereach has a soggy patch by the driveway and a basement that smells on humid days. You search for septic service, call the first number, and an hour later someone is quoting a new system before anyone has opened a lid. Most of the time, the better first call is to a company that pumps and inspects, and the bigger decisions come after they have looked.

These systems are everywhere out here. County officials say nearly 70% of Suffolk homes use cesspools or septic systems. In Nassau, a 2022 paper from the county’s Soil and Water Conservation District describes the North Shore as 90% unsewered, with roughly 40,000 onsite systems draining toward Long Island Sound.

Match the job to the company

Suffolk’s licensing law is the clearest map of who does what. Section 563-79 of the county code splits the industry into separate endorsements, and a company needs the one that matches the work.

The same law lists endorsements for grease traps, portable toilets, bulk liquid waste hauling and vacuum truck services. Those are commercial jobs, and most homeowners will never need them.

Endorsements take training

Under section 563-79, the conventional installation endorsement requires a Long Island Liquid Waste Association training class and its certification test, or an equivalent program the county approves. The installer endorsement for nitrogen-reducing systems requires manufacturer certificates and the conventional installation endorsement first. To renew, holders need continuing education: eight hours for pumping and conventional maintenance, 12 for installation and the advanced systems.

How Nassau differs

Nassau does not use the endorsement system. Its Office of Consumer Affairs licenses “cesspool builders and cleaners” and “sewer cleaners” as home improvement contractors. In Nassau, then, ask what the company actually does day to day, and look up its home improvement license.

A yearly check for systems with moving parts

A plain tank or cesspool can go up to three years between inspections by the EPA’s guidance. Add a pump, a float switch or other moving parts and the EPA wants someone looking at it about every year. That covers ejector pumps in finished basements and every nitrogen-reducing system with a blower or control panel.

Before you book anyone

  • Tell them whether you have a cesspool, a septic tank or a newer treatment unit, if you know.
  • Ask which county license they hold, and in Suffolk, which endorsements.
  • Ask for a written record of what they found along with the bill.
  • For anything bigger than a pump-out, get a second quote. Our quote form sends one request to up to three companies.

Septic service questions

What does a septic service company do?

Suffolk's licensing law lists the work in pieces. One company may pump and clean tanks and cesspools, another may install conventional systems, and a third may service nitrogen-reducing systems. Each needs its own endorsement on a county liquid waste license.

How often does a septic system need service?

For an ordinary household system, the EPA's numbers are an inspection every three years or sooner and a pump-out every three to five. Anything with a pump or float switch should be looked at about yearly.

Is septic service the same in Nassau?

The work matches, but the license works differently. Nassau handles it through its home improvement license, which the Office of Consumer Affairs requires for cesspool builders and cleaners and for sewer cleaners. We did not find a Nassau version of Suffolk's liquid waste license.

Do I have a septic tank or a cesspool?

On Long Island the odds favor a cesspool. In Suffolk, 252,530 of the roughly 365,000 home systems in the county's 2020 wastewater plan were cesspools with no tank, per a 2024 Suffolk Times report. Your last pumping receipt or home inspection usually says which you have.
